چکیده

We show how two general notions of domain theory, the logic induced from the Scott topology on a domain, together with the Smyth powerdomain, interact with the theory of default reasoning introduced by Reiter 19]. We deene extensions, which are xed points of a certain non-monotonic operator on a Scott domain induced by a normal default set over that domain. We specialize this deenition to the Smyth powerdomain, which consists of all nonempty compact sets in the Scott topology, ordered by reverse subset inclusion. Our main result is a general \splitting theorem" showing how any extension E of a union of compact sets U and V can be written as a union E = E U E V , where E U and E V are either empty or extensions of U and V respectively. This result holds in arbitrary Scott domains, provided the set of \power defaults" is obtained from \default constraints", a natural way of introducing defaults over the Smyth powerdomain. We apply our methodology in rst-order systems. As in 20], we equip standard rst-order logic with a Kleene 3-valued partial model semantics. Then, using our methodology, we add power defaults to this semantic system. We show how, in this application, the Extension Splitting Theorem sanctions default reasoning by cases. We point out, though, that our methodology applies much more generally than the rst-order case. It is a valid method for default reasoning in any setting appropriately modeled by Scott domains.

Results on Translating Defaults to Circumscription

In this paper we define different concepts, of translating a set of defaults into circumscription The most important of these-modular translation requires that the additive changes of specific facts (not defaults) of default theory translate to the additive changes of the simple abnormality theory (corresponding to circumscription). We show that, surprisingly enough, the important class of defa...

Determining Effect of Defaults on Grid Parity

Human activities emitting greenhouse gases (e.g. carbon dioxide) are the main cause of observed warming since the mid-20 th century. Because a large fraction of human emissions are from conventional power sources it will be important to adopt carbon neutral technologies such as alternative energy sources (IPCC, 2013). Grid parity is the point at which alternative energy sources reach a levelize...

Model-Preference Default Theories

Most formal theories of default inference have very poor computational properties, and are easily shown to be intractable, or worse, undecidable. We are therefore investigating limited but efficiently computable theories of default reasoning. This paper defines systems of Propositional Model-Preference Defaults, which provide a true modeltheoretic account of default inference with exceptions. T...

Automatically Green: Behavioral Economics and Environmental Protection

Careful attention to choice architecture promises to open up new possibilities for environmental protection — possibilities that may be more effective than the standard tools of economic incentives, mandates, and bans. How, for example, do consumers choose between environmentally friendly products or services and alternatives that are potentially damaging to the environment but less expensive? ...
